2. Afrifact for depth of content knowledge in English
Thoreau and the Events of His Time
This paper was assigned in ENG 265. The assignement was to compare a peice of literature we had read in class to a historical event conteporary to the time it was written. I chose to write about Henry David Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience" as it related to the events of the Mexican War.
I think that this paper not only demonstrates my language arts content knowledge but it demonstrates a cross curricular ability to integrate language arts with social studies. As a dual certified teacher the ability to integrate the two is invaluable.
3. Aftifact for depth of content knowledge in history
This paper was assigned in HI 251. The assignment was to survey the information covered in the course and discuss the themes of freedom and liberty throughout early US history. I chose to look at the idea of America as the land of opertunity and in turn how those opertunities gave individuals their freedom, sometimes to the benefit and at the expense of others.
I think that this paper demonstates my historical content knowledge as if covers a breadth of information from the ice age migrations to the civil war and reconstruction eara. I think it also reflects an ability to discuss history thematically as well as merely chronologically, an essentail asset to designing effective and engaging lessons in history as well as language arts.
