Growing up I was deeply envolved with 4H, competing in many of the equine educational competitions (Horse Bowl, Hippology, and Horse Judging) as well as showing at the district, state, and regional level. Since aging out of 4H I have come back and volunteered as a leader in my 4H club and have been acting as coach for our educational competition teams. The following are some of the study materials I have created in order to better coach my teams and instruct them on all things horse related.

1. Hippology ID's

Hippo IDs Part 1

Hippo IDs Part 2 (too big to attach)

Hippo IDs Part 3

This are fairly simple in their design but fun and interactive in their use. The term that corresponds with the image is hidden firt and you click to reveal. For the Hippology contest in one of the phases participants are given a series of images of anything and everything horse related to identify via multiple choice questions. The second phase is a multiple choice written exam of horse related questions. The third phase is an abreviated version of the horse judging contest. For the senior team competition they must also solve a team problem, basically a critical thinking essay question. These powerpoints are meant to test their ID skills.

This artifact not only demonstrates my creative abilities with PowerPoint but also my passion for horses and 4H. I think it is important for teachers to be well rounded and have special knowledge outside of their content area.

2. Halter Judging Classes

The Horse Judging competition is just as the name would imply: a contest in which participants judge classes of horses and earn points compared to the designated offical placing. In addition to their judging scores partipants must give oral reasons in which they are to argue their opinion on how they felt the class should be placed supported with relevant terminology. To best practice for this contest requires classes to practice with. These and my many other practice classes I have saved on my computer reflect many hours scowering the internet finding horse pictures. These classes displayed here are for juding conformation, or how the horse is built (like in dog shows). Contestants will aslo judge performance classes in which the horses are shown under saddle. For those I have taken to putting together classes from horse sale vidoes on Youtube.

Once again I think this artifact reflects my creative abilites with PowerPoint. I think it also reflects my level of dedication to the success of my 4Hers in these competitions. To my credit as a coach we had had several Junior Hippology team champions and high individuals as well as high individuals in Junior as well as Senior Horse Judging.
